Hi. I have been recently enrolled in a full-time doctoral study in Sheffield University and need to obtain funding for it as I don’t think I can financially aid my research. Can someone brief a little about the requirements of Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the procedure they follow for funding doctoral candidates? Can someone give me suggestions on how can I write a strong application so that I face no major hitches in getting funded by BBSRC?

Freshman yeah? Do not think I mean to scare you or somewhat but as HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) records only 15% of those applying for PhD funding are able to get financial aid which means you ought to really secure a back up plan. This is a good post, if you go through it and stick to the format & structure, chances of grant will definitely increase https://www.fundingcentre.com.au/help/writing-grant

If you are seeking funds from BBSRC, then before writing grants, first check if you are eligible for it or not! As far as I know, they fund only those who are employed as a junior researcher or at least a contract of lecturer level or equivalent that extends to beyond the duration of the proposed grant. I would advise you first to check your eligibility!

Ah! Strong Application right? Well, the funding application is called strong only if it has some potential to impress the examiners. Think about the probable questions that you might happen to when anyone scans through your application and answer them in your application. Let me say I’m one of the committee members who will decide if you are to be given funding or not. I will probably judge you on the basis of relevance of your proposed research project, its timeline, how many papers you have published in which journal, your academic interests, about yourself, your choice of undertaking a particular study is justified or not, how well you can present it, the way it is written and structured and you know stuff like that. Got an idea? All the luck!!

Hi! Good to know you are from Sheffield University. I was graduated from there last year. Anyhow, the uni has associations with BBSRC, and if you checked university website thoroughly, you might have found this official website of BBSRC where you get all the required information regarding the application procedure. http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/documents/grants-guide/
